A few weeks ago I asked God a dangerous question. I asked, “Father, what does my heart need?”
I say this is dangerous because it wasn’t long ago the thought of asking God something – anything – wasn’t even on my radar. God already said what He needed to say in the Bible, so what more does He need to say, right? It was also dangerous because I feared that God would drop the hammer on me, just like my dad. Sure, I have been adopted as God’s son, but that doesn’t mean He has to like me.
But I am ever so slowly beginning to experience the fact that God’s heart for me really is good. So after I posed the question, that old tinge of fear quickly subsided. And what I heard was so good for my heart.
He said, “Remember who you are.” Ah, yes. Remember who I am.
I don’t know about you, but every morning I seem to wake up with spiritual amnesia. It’s like I have totally forgotten who I am, who God is, what I’m supposed to do, and what God has done. Every day I seem to start all over.
I think that’s why Peter tells us in his second book that he needs to remind us and refresh our memory in regards to our glorious inheritance in Christ.
So every morning I make it a point to remember who I am: The beloved son and image bearer of a good and loving Father. And I remember that I live in a world at war. The enemy is relentless in his pursuit to destroy all that is good in my life. So I intentionally “armor up” every day.
What do you need to do to remember who you are? I encourage you to do whatever it takes. And do it every day, as you crawl out of bed and your feet hit the floor. No excuses.
In order to experience Life and Freedom, you must remember who you are!
